Christian Fundamentalism Accused and Abused

Written By: Dan Stanley  |  Posted: Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

Recent accused murderer Anders Breivik is, among other things, being labeled a Christian Fundamentalist.  Nothing could be further from the truth.   The attempt to associate Breivik, who murdered over seventy young people on an island retreat in Norway, with Christian Fundamentalism  reveals either ignorance,  a redefining of words or an outright attack on true Christian Fundamentalism.

Historic Fundamentalism rose out of an attack on Christianity by liberal theology (those who deny the supernatural person and work of Jesus Christ) in the latter part of the 19th century.  As a result, two businessmen became responsible in the early 1900's for putting together a series of small books, which they mailed out to ministers all over the country.  Eventually these books became a four volume series entitled The Fundamentals in 1917.   In them they defended the authenticity of the Bible and the supernatural work and person of Jesus Christ, among other things.
