The water is warm, the grass is tall, and berries are beginning to ripen. Summer is definitely here; bringing with it many vivid memories of the times I spent working at Shady Rest Lodge, a beautiful family resort in Rhinelander, Wisconsin.
I began working at the resort as a babysitter, watching the owners' children, as their mother was the head cook. That first summer as a teenager, I enjoyed the time spent with the children taking walks, playing outside as much as possible, and going swimming nearly every day. There was one day that summer when their mother was unable to be in the kitchen following breakfast due to a severe migraine headache, and there was still some cooking left to be done. The assistant cook was out of town for that weekend, and most of the other staff members had the day off and were gone. As it was early in the season, there were only a handful of guests to serve, so I was called upon to make an apple pie for dessert and blueberry muffins for the next morning-so began my following years of summertime cooking in the kitchen at Shady Rest Lodge.
