Controversy greeted the long-awaited mining bill introduced Thursday that supporters say will trigger an economic boon for Wisconsin, but critics contend could spell environmental disaster.
Driving the discussion over whether and how to reform the state's mine-permitting process isGogebic Taconite's proposal for an open-pit iron mine in the Penokee Range. The company has leased the rights to 22,000 acres near Ashland, but last spring it delayed its plans, citing the need for a permitting process with a finite end point.
