The County Jail Dilemma

In June of 2009 the Eau Claire City Council voted 5-6 to nix the Eau Claire County's request for rezoning that would allow them to build a multi-million dollar addition to the county jail. Nine of the eleven votes were needed for it to pass. Comments on the WEAU website following the ruling demonstrate the divisiveness of the debate and ruling.

On the negative side local residents don't want more criminals in their neighborhood, and they don't want the beautiful Chippewa River skyline spoiled by another building. "Put it somewhere else, " they demand.
