Constitution, Like Bible, Not Owned by Those in Authority

            Richard Stengel, Managing Editor of Time Magazine, makes a point that has been well known by a few, but long overlooked by many. It took him a while, but finally it dawned on him. Let me put it in his own words. "...I came to believe that the Constitution can't become the exclusive province of judges and lawyers. The views of everyday Americans - We the People - are far more important," he writes in the July 4th, 2011 edition of Times. This is an extremely important point to note, especially when given by the managing editor of Times.

            There is a prevailing thinking that somehow politicians, judges, legislators and executives as our government office holders are somehow the final say on what the Constitution means. Do they swear on a Bible to uphold this foundational document of our country? Yes, they and many other office holders including sheriffs and military men and women swear to do so. But notice they swear to uphold it, not to be the final say on it. Their job is to obey it so we can exercise the liberty for which it was written. It is not to play "God" in thinking somehow they have a market on what it means.
