Ten Reasons Why the Bible is the Word of God - Part Ten -

My tenth reason for believing the Bible to be the Word of God is because of the testimony of the HOLY SPIRIT to that fact. We began two nights ago with the testimony of the second person of the Trinity to the divine origin and authority of the Bible; we close with the testimony of the third person of the Trinity to the same fact. To anyone who puts himself in the right attitude toward God and the truth, the Holy Spirit bears direct testimony that the voice that speaks to him from the Bible is the voice of God. Our Lord Jesus Christ says in John 8:47: "He that is of God (literally "out of God, " that is, born of God) heareth the words of God: for this cause ye hear them not, because ye are not of God." That is to say, that everyone born of God gets a divinely given instinct whereby he knows the voice of God from every other voice, and he knows that the voice that speaks to him from this Book is the voice of God. Again our Lord Jesus says in John 10:27: "My sheep hear my voice." That is to say, that every one of Christ's sheep has a divinely given instinct by which he knows the voice of the Good Shepherd from every other voice, and he knows that the voice that speaks to him from this Book is the voice of the Good Shepherd.

You will often meet a godly old lady, of perhaps no very wide reading or culture, but who still has a firm faith that the Bible is the Word of God. If you ask her why she believes the Bible to be the Word of God she will answer, "I know that it is the Word of God." "Yes, but why do you believe it to be the Word of God?" And again she answers, "I know it is the Word of God." "Yes, but why do you believe it to be the Word of God?" And again she replies: "I know it is the Word of God." You smile and say to yourself, "Oh, I'll not disturb the old lady's faith" (never fear, you could not if you wished to), you say, "I will not disturb the old lady's faith, but she is beneath reason." You are mistaken. She is above reason. She is a child of God and she has a divinely given instinct by which she knows the voice of God from every other voice, and she knows that the voice that speaks to her from this Book is the voice of God. She is one of Christ's sheep and she has a divinely given instinct by which she knows the voice of the Good Shepherd from every other voice, and she knows that that voice that speaks to her from this Book is the voice of the Good Shepherd.
