From the Attacks to the Memorial

The Transformation of Ground Zero
It was insignificant, surrounded by hundreds of trees planted in the newly unveiled 9/11 Memorial. I didn't even notice it until the policeman I was talking to pointed to the tree and said it was the only thing to survive the attacks in one piece. I moved closer; it looked like a regular tree but it wasn't, because it was a survivor. The 30-foot tree was found in October 2001, nursed back to health and replanted in the memorial site. Its symbolism is unmistakable as it represents renewed life in the midst of chaos, ruin, turmoil and tragedy.
