In an effort to delay the recall elections of six Republican State Senators, six "former" Republicans have joined the races as protest candidates. This results in an automatic primary election on July 12th, delaying the general election to August 9th. A letter promoting the petition required to get the candidates on the ballot states, "Please help maintain our Republican legislative majority today! We can't stress enough how important it is to have Rol [Church] (running in the 14th Senate District) on the ballot to combat the shady maneuvers of Madison liberals and their out-of-state allies."
The purpose of the effort according to another petition letter is to "push the general election back by one month, so that Senator Hopper (challenged in the 18th district) can have more time to organize a campaign against his liberal challenger."
