Frac Sand Mining Facts

There have been several public listening sessions in Western Wisconsin over the past year where residents have been encouraged to express their concerns about the proposed sand mines.

The major concerns expressed, and the opinions promulgated about frac sand mining, center around air quality and water pollution and/or water depletion. A lot of misinformation and the resulting fears have dominated those comments. That is not to say that there are not legitimate concerns. Let's examine the facts. Hydraulic fracturing sand, or frac sand, is silica sand, or silicon dioxide (SiO2). It is the second most common
mineral on the earth's surface.
