Wisconsin Legislators Call for Caylee's Law

            The nation-wide anger over the verdict of the Casey Anthony celebrity murder trial has even affected legislators in Wisconsin.  Across the country, many are calling on the states to enact "Caylee's Law" which would make it a felony if a parent or caregiver waits over a certain period of time before reporting a missing or dead child.  Early last week, Representative Samantha Kerkman (R-Randall) released a statement announcing "that she is working with a number of legislators across the state on a bill that would provide penalties for failing to report the death or disappearance of a child."  This after she reported that she received hundreds of emails asking for it to be introduced.

            Later last week, U.S. Representative Sean Duffy added his voice in a letter to Scott Fitzgerald and Jeff Fitzgerald, the Wisconsin State Senate Majority Leader and the Speaker of the Wisconsin State Assembly stating that, "as the DA for Ashland County, I aggressively prosecuted offenders who took advantage of vulnerable children. Federal jurisdiction is limited in scope with regards to missing children.  That is why I urge Wisconsin state lawmakers to take action on this issue. This unfortunate court case may have unfolded differently if there were laws placing the responsibility on parents or legal guardians to report missing children."
