In the Garden - Soil Preparation

                The last time I wrote, we had just come off a couple of nice early spring days and the gardener in me (and I suspect everyone else!) was eager to get out in the dirt and get going.  Well, we forget that this is Wisconsin and changes of weather are around every corner.  As I write this, we have come off some wonderful spring days and the planting itch is back. Last year I wrote about soil preparation and, because the condition of the soil is so important, I think this bears repeating.  Like many things in life, a good foundation is essential to producing a good product.

                First of all, care needs to be given to the zone your garden grows in.  Don't let the beautiful pictures of ripe fruit and vegetables lure you to choose something that will not do well.  Here in Eau Claire WI that would be USDA Zone 4.   Zones are based on the cold temperatures of winter and warm temperatures of summer.  Either extreme can leave you disappointed in the outcome of your crop.  Check with some local gardeners in your area if you are new to this and wondering what survives best.
