"It's so discouraging," Jake Lightner lamented to his real estate agent as they toured a 10-bedroom oceanfront estate in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. "This is a very nice place, but it's just not up to par with our needs."

Mr. Lightner, 32-year-old CEO of gaming software company Time-Sponge, pensively rubbed the Rolex watch around his wrist as if trying to make a wish on it. "It sure would be nice if we could afford a higher price range."
