Raspberries
One of the joys of summertime is eating fresh berries. These tasty berries are available all year in your larger supermarkets, but they are expensive. You can grow an abundant crop in your own backyard with a little attention at planting time and spring pruning.
Raspberries are also known as brambles and are members of the genus Rubus, which belongs to the Rose family. They include red raspberries, the most popular; yellow raspberries, which are variations of the reds; black raspberries or "black caps", a native American plant that has been brought into cultivation; purple raspberries a hybrid between red and black raspberries; and blackberries, a common name used for several native and naturalized species often found wild on the edges of forests and wooded areas. Today, I will discuss red raspberries, some common varieties and the characteristics of them. We are very busy in the Larson garden these days, so this will conclude in the next issue
