At last May's City Council meeting, the council approved an application for almost $1.3 million of Federal grant money for the purpose of "Community Development". The "Community Development Block Grant" and the "HOME Investment Partnership Program" helps Eau Claire pay for such programs that improve the appearance of neighborhoods, helps poor people buy, construct, improve, or rent housing, assist local social programs, and other welfare programs. The money also is used to help pay for the enforcement of building codes and development of comprehensive planning schemes. A list of the various programs can be found under the Eau Claire City Council Voting Records on page A4.
Very few people question whether the city should accept this money. In fact, many would consider it foolish not to accept this since it's free and will benefit the community. But lately there has been an increase of those reconsidering taking Federal money.
