Should the Christian Right Support Ron Paul?

Written By: James Hudson  |  Posted: Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Ron Paul and his supporters were the center of the headlines concerning the recent Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) last week. The buzz was whether or not he and his libertarian following can be called conservative or not. One side says that because of his strict constitutionalism and his views on limited government that he is the strongest conservative of them all. Others consider his anti-war positions and the fact that many of his supporters are proponents of immorality (homosexuality, drug legalization, etc.) as proof that Paul is the enemy of the conservative right.

This could create quite a crisis among the Christian Right, especially with the recent reactions against the democrat's socialist agenda. Many on the right are fed up with the Republican's lack of efficient action in opposing health care reform, bail-outs, and privacy issues. They are impressed with Ron Paul's consistent stands on limited government and individual rights. But Paul's strict constitutionalism keeps him from supporting the federal defense of marriage amendment and a federal ban on abortion; as a result, many pro-homosexual and pro-abortion groups on the fiscally conservative side of politics support him - even fanatically. This is, and ought to be, a concern for Christians.
