Life on the Family Farm Under an Open Heaven - America (A Land of Dreams and Equality)

Oftentimes as I work on my farm here, I think of what my ancestors went through to come to America. I think of my great-great grandfather, August Ferdinand Heck and his wife, Wilhelmine with three young children making the decision to leave Germany and sail for America. August was 40 years old and Wilhelmine was almost 30-not exactly young kids!
The timing of their leaving Germany and coming to America truly amazes me. Mid-March 1861, they set sail for their new home country, with their youngest child being only six weeks old. And this new home was a country starting to go into a terrible bloody civil war. I think I would think twice before going to a new country, if that country was going into a civil war that could destroy itself.
