Hope for the Desolate

            To most Americans, orphanages are a thing of the distant past, the stage of Dickens's novels and Victorian stories.  However, to the children of Jamaica, orphanages are an everyday reality.  Although the total population of Jamaica is only 2.7 million, there are 880 orphanages. In early December, Amanda Rodriguez of Eau Claire wanted to reach out to some of these orphanages. "I went because it was an orphanage and we can't really experience something like that [in the US] and I love children," said Amanda.  She chose to serve in a Jamaican children's home called the Robin's Nest.

             In 1998, Michelle Robinette wanted to serve the Lord on the mission field.  She saw the great needs of orphans and abandoned children in Jamaica so she opened Robin's Nest children's home to care for them.   Currently the home shelters 29 children ages 6 months to fifteen years old.  Not all of the children are orphans.  Some children were abandoned by their parents because the child has special needs or they simply do not want the responsibility of raising them.
