Some of you are old enough to remember when every small town had their own little bak ery where all the community bought their bread and baked treats. The Aroma of fresh bread wafted through the streets as the baker completed his nighttime toils. With the advent of mass produced foods and big box marts, the days of the town baker, or any artisan, are pretty much at an end. Fortunately, a little bakery in downtown Augusta is trying to hold on to this tradition. Augusta Bakery, otherwise known as Our Daily Bread makes their goods the old way- from scratch, fresh every day.
John and Wendy Deering bought the business from a friend two years ago. The Deerings had owned a restaurant in Ladysmith some years ago and were looking to move back to the Augusta area. When the opportunity to buy the bakery was offered them, they jumped at it. The bakery was ideal for them because it was a chance for the whole family to get involved now that their children were old enough to help out. "The idea of a family business sort of appeals to us," admits John, "where we can work together as a family."
