In the Garden

       After a wet and cold spring, our wish for summer weather is finally coming true. Temperatures in the 80s during the day and 60s at night are just what our little garden plants need to grow big. The strawberries are in full bloom and without any frost on the apple blossoms this year we are hoping for an apple crop. Of course, along with the rows of beets, radishes, beans, corn, and other plants, come the WEEDS! I was visiting with a fellow gardener about the most successful things a garden can do to assure a thriving, healthy garden. We talked (rather smartly!) about the proper ph levels, the best time to plant, the best types of fertilizers and seeds, but in the end, my stand was perseverance!! The best gardeners do pay attention to all of these things, but you can't let the weeds get a jump on you.

       When you grow up gardening and hoeing like Bob and I did, you learn from an early age to distinguish between a weed and a good plant. Everyone knows what a dandelion looks like but it takes some experience to tell what a beet plant is and what a lambs quarter is. I've been told that you can eat lambs quarter leaves but they will always be weeds to me.
