Hurricanes May Disrupt Oil Spill Containment
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has predicted an above average amount of hurricanes and tropical storms this season. "If this outlook holds true, this season could be one of the more active on record, " said Jane Lubchenco, Ph.D., under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator. "The greater likelihood of storms brings an increased risk of a landfall. In short, we urge everyone to be prepared." This could slow down the oil spill relief work off of Louisiana's shore. The Center is projecting a seventy percent probability of eight to fourteen hurricanes of which three to seven could be category three or higher. The NHC cites a weaker amount of hurricane reducing wind shears, warm Atlantic Ocean water where the storms develop, and the belief that the Caribbean/Gulf of Mexico Basin is in an era of high activity. "Eight of the last fifteen seasons rank in the top ten for the most named storms with 2005 in first place with 28 named storms", says the National Weather Service. 125, 000 Jobs Lost in June The Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics released a report on employment figures Friday and the news isn't good.
